Négoce (NAY-goz): n. 1.) A French term that is synonymous with the English ‘commerce’ or ‘trade’.
The last two decades have seen an increasing consolidation of the wholesale beverage trade. The large corporations continue to get larger through acquisitions and mergers, and the result is a wholesale environment that finds it increasingly difficult to focus qualitative attention on mid to small-size producers. While there are some viable mid-sized distributors, few are ‘full book’ (wine, spirits, beer, etc.), and most are quite content with the status quo. This is true not only of Minnesota, but of the U.S. market as a whole.
It is this environment that got us thinking that Minnesota could sure use a strong mid-sized, full-book wholesaler. And that’s exactly why we started Négoce.
Négoce is the culmination of Mat Garretson’s nearly 40 years of experience in the wine and spirit industry. Having spent most of his life in ownership and/or senior management positions at every tier of the industry, Mat is uniquely qualified to understand what is expected from both suppliers to, and customers of, a successful wholesale operation.
It is our intention to provide Minnesota license-holders with a decidedly different type of wholesale partner. Our portfolio is a reflection of Mat’s deep and long-standing relationships with some of the world’s finest winemakers, distillers and brewers. Our management and sales team are comprised of veterans of the Minnesota wholesale market, each of whom shares Mat’s desire to step out of the (often) corporatized, lethargic and uninspiring way of doing business, and to get back to the FUN of selling products you’re passionate about.

Négoce seeks to create a different type of wholesale operation. It’s not enough for us to simply take, process and deliver an order. It has to be more than that.
All of us got to where we are in this business through the help and guidance of mentors. We are firm believers in the practice of ‘sending the elevator back down’. This belief compels us to take an active role in improving our industry…to make it a better one than when we arrived. We intend to do this by providing unparalleled opportunities for Minnesota industry members to expand their knowledge and appreciation of this business we so love.

Our wine portfolio represents some of the world’s finest producers. Some of these producers will no doubt be very familiar to you, while others you may have only read about. Still others may be complete strangers to you. It is our hope that, with time and experience that you will come to find that every winery partner we have is worthy of your consideration. We can’t wait to share these producers with you!

The growth of craft distilling has been both exciting and concerning. While there’s some truly passionate people creating some amazing distillates, there are even more people who have opened distilleries without a clue as to what they’re doing, or where they are going. We’ve ‘separated the wheat from the chaff’, having assembled a portfolio of some of the finest distilleries in the world. Like our wine book, some will be familiar, others less so.
